Three murals by artist Sam Yong were commissioned by Yarra and are located on the Collingwood Senior Citizens Centre (CSSC), next to the Collingwood Town Hall, on Hoddle street in Collingwood.
Two large walls facing Hoddle Street and the wall facing the Collingwood Town Hall were transformed into vibrant, natural settings teaming with flora and fauna. Showcasing some of the regions native flora and fauna, the murals include a sugar glider, a blue tongue lizard, painted lady butterflies, an eastern spinebill and a red-rumped parrot in a setting of Banksia, Eucalypts and Chocolate Lillies.
Usually small and unnoticed, on the walls of the building these species are rendered extraordinarily large, bringing in to sharp focus the plight of these tiny creatures.
Sam's murals reference the City of Yarra's Nature Strategy: Protecting Yarra's Unique Biodiversity 2020-2024. The murals were completed in June, 2020.
Yarra's Aged and Disabiliy Services consulted with users of the CSSC who decided that the outside of their building needed to match the spirit and brightness of the inside activities. The building is used for dancing, singing, exercise classes, meetings, shared meals and other activities involving seniors, families, Chinese veterans, the Greek Club, several different cultural groups and LGBTI community members.
