In Fortunes of the Forest, artist Caitlin Franzmann and performer Amaara Raheem join forces in a unique collaboration.

Deploying the hand-crafted divination cards that Caitlin created in collaboration with photographer Man Cheung during her residency in Karawatha Forest (Brisbane, 2017), Caitlin and Amaara will unfold the richness of an Australian forest in a small, urban park.

Fortunes of the Forest is a one-to-one-to-one encounter between these two artists and an individual. Selecting a card from the deck, visitors will receive a divination reading as well as a gift of a small dance triggered by the card they have chosen. Each divination card depicts a plant, rock or insect found in Karawatha Forest, celebrating these beings with whom we share primeval genes.

Fortunes of the Forest is a participatory performance event that encourages slowness, plant knowledge, social interaction, dancing, listening, observing and reflecting. Fortunes of the Forest weaves ethnobotanical, biological and spiritual stories with choreography and performance to produce something magical and medicinal that is intimate, relaxed, in-depth and unique to each visitor.

This work is supported by The City of Yarra through a small project grant.
