Reko Rennie

Post Office Lane, corner 172 Victoria Street, Richmond

Welcome is a bold and vibrant text based artwork which uses the word or idea of ‘welcome’ in multiple languages and fonts.

This work makes reference to the various countries around the world that represent the diversity of our community. Included in this welcome is the word ‘Womenjika’, a welcome in the language of the Traditional Owners of the Melbourne area, the Boon Wurrung and Wurundjeri peoples of the Kulin Nation.

Reko Rennie is an interdisciplinary artist who explores his Aboriginal identity through contemporary mediums. Rennie’s art incorporates his association to the Kamilaroi people, using traditional geometric patterning that represents his community.

Through his art, Rennie provokes discussion surrounding Indigenous culture and identity in contemporary urban environments.

Welcome is in Post Office Lane, located off Victoria Street in Richmond. The work was produced as part of Council’s upgrade of the laneway and was completed in July 2014.
