Miller is best known for his portraits and figurative works.

As a realist painter he captures the likeness of his subject in fine detail. In this painting Dr. Jonathan Hartley is depicted in a proud stance wearing his much loved fur coat. Dr. Hartley is an esteemed doctor of dentistry. He is Miller’s dentist and previously that of the Collingwood Football Club. An avid art collector for well over 30 years, Dr. Hartley has supported artists by assisting them with dental work, as well as being a generous benefactor to the City of Yarra having donated over forty artworks to the Collection in recent years. 

About the artist

Lewis Miller is one of Australia’s most respected portrait painters. He won Australia’s Archibald Prize in 1998 with a portrait of fellow artist Allan Mitelman and has been a finalist 17 times. His works are held in numerous public and private art collections in Australia and internationally including the National Gallery of Australia and National Portrait Gallery, Canberra. He has had over 30 solo shows and has been included in over 90 group shows. He is currently represented by Australian Galleries, Melbourne.
