Kylie Stillman

Note

Artwork by Kylie Stillman

Note is a suite of small informal messages, records and markings from the everyday, presented in a way to call the viewer to pay attention.

Working with piles of similarly-sized paperback books, Stillman cuts negative shapes into the front edge, reminiscent of hand-drawn markings found on scrap-paper notes.

Communicating feelings of immediacy the works are also far from spontaneous and effortless, with each piece considered and removed by hand with a scalpel. The contemplation and aptitude required to produce these works is akin to the response intended by the viewer – to arrive at a deep contemplative moment whilst passing through the library.

Note was exhibited at at Bargoonga Nganjin from 9 October until 3 December 2017.
