Artist talk and book signing with Rod McNicol
Sunday 26 February 2023
Born in 1946, Rod McNicol studied photography at Prahran College in the 1970s and completed an MFA at Monash University in 2007. Since 1978 he has lived and worked in an old daylit warehouse/studio in Fitzroy where for more than four decades he has pursued his passion for photographic portraiture.
McNicol has always drawn his subjects from the everchanging, inner-city life around him in the vibrant Fitzroy/Collingwood area. His photographs have a gentle stillness tempered by an unrelenting directness that pares portraiture back to something of its bare essence.
He won the Australian Photographic Portrait Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 2004, and the 2012 National Photographic Portrait Prize at the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra. His work has been widely exhibited and is held in major public collections including the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria, the National Portrait Gallery, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Monash Gallery of Art and the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
Join us to hear Rod speak about his practice; the various vibrant subcultures he has portrayed from the streets of Fitzroy and Collingwood; and his book ' A Portrait', recently published by M.33.
