Gabe Freeman

Working as a costume and props maker for 25 years has informed a sculptural view of my art practice. I am interested in scale, form and texture and how these can be used to play with perceptions of familiar objects. I like to tease out ideas and materials in unconventional ways, viewing the objects and more than the sum of their parts.
I choose to work instinctively with the images favouring colour and form over meticulous planning.
Outwardly playful, my work explores subtle shifts which uncover deeper themes. Below the surface, universal subjects of loss, grief and belonging are revealed.
By re-contextualizing images found in old books combined with original photography of my surroundings these themes and memories are explored to create a visual narrative of a nostalgic future.

Digital collage is my preferred medium due to the endless possibilities and the low impact it has on our already cluttered world.
