This year, Yarra City Council is celebrating women’s achievements and providing opportunities for the local community to come together and drive change on International Women's Day.

Drawing on this year’s International Women’s Day theme, Inspire Inclusion, Council has organised a host of events across the municipality including business networking events, art exhibitions, free group exercise classes and a Wikipedia edit-a-thon with The Women’s Art Register, aimed at improving coverage of women artists.

Yarra City Council has a key role to play in fostering a fairer, safer and more inclusive community for all and working to improve the lives of women, girls and people of diverse genders.

This year’s International Women’s Day events form part of Council’s broader strategies and actions aimed at promoting gender equality from a social, economic and cultural perspective.

Other recent activities include:

  • Working to make cycling safer for women who are underrepresented as a proportion of all cyclists in Yarra, through the New Deal for Cycling.
  • Funding women-led empowerment initiatives like the MiCare Yarra Women Behind the Wheel Project, which assists women from refugee and migrant backgrounds to get their driver's licence, through our Community Grants program.
  • Welcoming and celebrating gender diversity through the LGBTIQA+ platform Rainbow Yarra.
