Midsumma and the Victorian Government brings Victoria's Pride Street Party back to Yarra this February

Tuesday 23 January 2024

Yarra’s famed Gertrude and Smith streets will come to life again in a vibrant street party with live music stages and performances from musicians and artists to celebrate Victoria’s diverse LGBTQIA+ communities.

Now in its third year, Victoria’s Pride Street Party is a celebration of our rainbow communities, held in Collingwood and Fitzroy. The event is now a regular on the Midsumma Festival program and is a huge success for local businesses, with more than 45,000 attendees.

The inaugural event was held February 2022, acknowledging the 40th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Victoria.

Yarra City Council Mayor Edward Crossland said Council is thrilled to see this celebration in Yarra again.

“Yarra is home to an incredible array of LGBTQIA+ friendly businesses, the award winning Queerways Mural, which retraces Yarra's Queer Footprints and history, and the iconic rainbow footpaths on the corners of Gertrude / Smith and Peel / Smith Streets, which are being refreshed and updated to include the Intersex Inclusive Pride Flag.”

“So many people in the rainbow community call Yarra home, with ten percent of our population identifying as LGBTQIA+”.

“We are committed to advocating for our LGBTQIA+ community and will push to see this landmark celebration always located in Yarra”.

“Diversity and inclusion are in the forefront of everything we do in Yarra. This event is just one of the ways we can show our support and celebrate the rainbow community”.
