Yalinguth Creative Director, Jason Tamiru with students and teachers of Sacred Heart Primary School.

Yalinguth (Yesterday in the Woi Wurrung language) is an augmented audio app that shares First Nations stories, songs, poems, and soundscapes related to place. The first site to launch has been Fitzroy, and there is a large amount of content to hear on the doorstep of Sacred Heart Primary School, and all through Atherton Gardens.

In 2022, the Yalinguth team took the project into the school to engage Grade 5/6 students and teachers with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history of the place they live, work, and attend school.

Through two workshops they experienced a Welcome to Country and were introduced to ways of thinking and relating to the world around them from the Yalinguth Creative Director, Jason Tamiru. They were able to walk-through Atherton Gardens listening to the Yalinguth App gaining knowledge of the experiences of the Stolen Generation at the Stolen Generations Marker.

The Yalinguth app uses geolocation and gave students an opportunity to use the technology helping to developed skills in spatial awareness, navigation, and map use. Back at school they shared through music, improvisation, and storytelling. Students gained confidence, a sense of pride, playing music for Jason, and then taking part in some improvised jamming sessions.

This pilot project helped the Yalinguth team to develop a 2-hour tour that has since been tailored for different audiences including schools and government staff. In 2023, Yalinguth will be inviting teachers on a Yalinguth Tour, equipping them to take students themselves.

Yalinguth would like to thank Yarra City Arts for supporting this project that has helping them to gain knowledge and resources to continue building the education and outreach components of the project.
