We are currently reviewing Yarra’s Arts and Heritage Collection Management Policy to see how effectively it supports Council’s vision. City of Yarra’s Art & Heritage Collection was founded in 1994, based on the range of artworks and cultural artefacts that the City of Yarra inherited through the amalgamation of the cities of Collingwood, Fitzroy and Richmond. The Collection represents the City of Yarra’s people and landscape, and is divided into the ‘Indoor Collection’ and the ‘Outdoor Collection’. The ‘Indoor Collection’ includes a range of items such as contemporary art, heritage art and heritage decorative arts which can be found in Council buildings. The ‘Outdoor Collection’ includes memorials, monuments and public art which can be found in streetscapes, on buildings and in parks across Yarra.

In 2009 Council formally recognised the Collection as a Council asset through the adoption of a 10 year Asset Management Plan. The Asset Management Plan set forth a plan to grow the collection; from 2010-2016 a number of contemporary artworks have been acquired through a dedicated budget of $50,000 (2010-2015) and $25,000 in 2016. The Collection has also grown through generous donations.  In 2010 Council was recognised as Cultural Gifts Organisation, and this has been the most effective means, and most significant way since 2017, of growing the Collection. 

Today Council’s vision is to make arts and culture an everyday experience in the City of Yarra.
