Fairfield in Feb is back in 2019 at the iconic Fairfield Amphitheatre!
Picture this: scenic views, family, friends, food, drinks and an excellent line-up of emerging artists. Spanning genres, cultures and fusing the traditional with the contemporary, this series of events explore the creative vitality and diversity of our local music scene.

We acknowledge these events are taking place on Wurundjeri land and we wish to pay our respects to their elders past, present and emerging.
The Wurundjeri Council will be opening up the proceedings with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony followed by a performance from the Djirri Djirri dancers.
The Merindas
The Melbourne-based duo's music is a tribute to their cultural heritage: a synthesis of warrior queen, on-trend style and rhythmic expression. Accompanied by the mastery of Jake Steele's mixing skills on stage, together creating an atmospheric fusion of Indigenous, electro-tribal-pop.

Known as the captivating front-woman for Melbourne’s jazz/disco outfit, ‘Squid Nebula’, Bumpy (Amy Dowd) also delivers her own independent artistry. Growing up on Gunai-Kurnai land, the Noongar Woman is an emerging talent that is bound to capture your attention. Thematically exploring hers truths of an Indigenous woman, retelling honest heartbreak and delivering it with her unique vocal quality, Bumpy invites you into her world of vulnerability and powerhouse vocals.

Self defined as a ‘Singer/songwriter oddly weird but 100% authentic who grew up in the small country town of Mooroopna (Shepparton)’ Aaron B is an emerging artist to watch combining heartfelt song writing with beautiful, memorable melodies.

Foreign Brothers and emerging curator Zoei Nijjar have put together an eclectic combination of music designed to make you dance! Each band have carved their own path within the local scene experimenting through improvisation, fusing the old and the new or subverting the old Pop canons with a Punk attitude. Featuring:
The Rookies
They have progressively become a staple of Melbourne’s refreshed jazz scene, holding down a residency at the Rooks Return for the past 4 years and cementing a community of music lovers around their parties. Lead by Greg Sher (alto saxophone) and joined by Tom Sly (trumpet), Joel Trigg (piano), Oscar Neyland (double bass) and Chris Cameron (drums and cymbals) each performance blends a nostalgic sense of the old world with the freedom and spontaneity of the new. Not quite jazz club, not quite night club. The energy is carried by the bands long standing musical brotherhood, interspersed with Greg’s satirical and quirky commentary.

Elle Shimada (live band)
"I'm obssesed with every perspective of the sound. May it be the music, the sound of the nature or city, rythmes and melodies, or may it be silence." Elle Shimada, a rising star of the electronic and improv scene presents her new band (with members from Close Counters, Zeigheist Freedom Energy Exchange, Sextet Manifesto), exploring futuristic beats with live instrumentation and cutting edge production. Leading the band with her violin, synths and programming, Shimada's music traverses the space between soulful house, drum and bass, hip hop, jazz and classical.

The idiosyncratic ball of quirky goodness has been hitting the live music scene hard. Niine's vibrant song writing and organic grooves have been making an impression since the end of 2016. As the world’s first avant-garde avalanche pop artist, she brings a completely new sound to the music scene through her recordings and live shows. Her abstract view of the pop world and discrete punk attitude is delivering exactly what the pop music scene craves.

SO.Crates is comprised of Melbourne born and raised producer SKOMES and MC Cazeaux O.S.L.O, a California-born Australian resident. One of Melbourne’s most beloved underground hip hop act, their sound is a culmination of their shared love for jazz, soul and hip hop in the vein of groups such as De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and the late 90s/early 2000s Rawkus era.

Cyanide Thornton
While incorporating elements of folk and rock, Cyanide Thornton transcends its composite parts, moving into a space of raw emotion and fierce determination. Ellah Blake (drums) and David Pesavento (bass) provide understated yet resolute punctuation for each song, holding together the music with a remarkable tenderness and affection, and providing a cradle for Sienna Thornton’s masterful and harrowing lyrics and guitar work.

For the final happening of the series, Stani Goma (Flight 106.7 to Africa – PBS FM) has put together a powerful line-up fusing traditional and contemporary sounds, celebrating the incredible music of local artists from African descent.
Melbourne African Traditional Ensemble (MATE)
A pan-African music project that brings together a range of traditional instruments from different parts of Africa to create new musical concepts based on the principles of Ujamaa. For Fairfield in Feb, the group will be presenting new collaborations with special guests to be announced!

Nominated for an ARIA awards, releasing their first highly acclaimed record ‘Dark Matter’ in 2018 and playing countless summer festivals, Digital Afrika have had a big year – and they’re just getting started. Bigoa Chuol
Melbourne-based South Sudanese up-and-coming spoken word artist who is rediscovering her love for writing and passion for poetry. Her art explores socio-political themes and challenges conventional ideas of love, relationships, beauty and womanhood. She hopes her art will uplift and empower others to own their own stories and even more importantly own being themselves unapologetically.
Local food suppliers to be announced soon and bar facilities available on site. This is a family-friendly, free event.
This event is produced by Foreign Brothers in collaboration with the Yarra City Council.
Established as a community-based collective in early 2013, the Foreign Brothers have progressively become a driving force within the local Melbourne music scene. Their passion for inclusive and innovative events has lead them to work with the City of Melbourne and Melbourne Music Week, Multicultural Arts Victoria, Creative Victoria, Strawberry Fields Festival, PBS 106.7 FM, Federation Square and the Lights in Winter Festival, the Footscray Community Arts Centre and some of the best live music venues in Melbourne.
