Sita Devi 

A ‘ledra’ is a small quilt made by stitching straight into layers of recycled cotton saris – as if constructing a drawing.

They are mostly created by grandmothers for newborns in the month leading up to harvest season. The practice is traditional to the Bihar region of India.

Sita Devi is from the Kurmi Tribe in the Jorakath Village, south of Hazaribagh, India.

She is one of the elder tribeswomen part of the Tribal Women’s Artist Co-operative.

The co-operative practices are contemporary productions of traditions from Bihar state and its surrounds in northern India.

Their creations are consistent with the broader practices of quilting and embroidery for which the northern regions of India are famous.
