Keith Haring Mural - Johnston Street Collingwood

Keith Haring

35 Johnston Street, Collingwood

The heritage-listed mural on Johnston Street in Collingwood painted by the late New York artist Keith Haring has been restored to its former glory.

Haring painted the mural at the former Collingwood Technical School site (on the corner of Johnston and Wellington streets) in 1984. The mural faded over time, prompting debate on how it should be preserved.

In July 2011, the State Government announced it would protect what remains of the mural by funding cleaning works and the application of a protective coating. More information about the restoration project can be found on Creative Victoria’s website.

This website, created with the support of Yarra Council, provides detailed written and visual accounts of Haring’s visit, as well as touching on his professional and personal legacy.

In 2004, Council successfully applied to have the mural heritage listed.

This listing on the Victorian Heritage Register website explains how the mural is of historic and social significance to the State of Victoria.
