Fitzroy Bowls 150 Years Memorial Wall

Fitzroy Bowls 150 Years Memorial Wall 2

Makatron

578 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy

This colourful new artwork by local artist Makatron, in collaboration with Conrad Bizjak and Bryan Itch, adorns the walls of the Fitzroy Victoria Bowling & Sports Club in North Fitzroy.

Like an urban jungle or safari, Makatron’s mural dazzles visually through its layered and detailed imagery of lush flora and inhabitant fauna, the vibrant palette inspired by the club’s colours of blue and maroon, as well as the sprawling gardens and greenery of the surrounding Edinburgh Gardens.

The lion features as the dominant animal representing the mascot of Fitzroy’s historical sporting clubs.

Over the next year, the Club will celebrate 150 years of bowling in Fitzroy and the artwork reflects and acknowledges this significant piece of local history. Council recently partnered with the Club to commission a sizeable mural on this iconic local sporting facility to defeat the continual tagging on the site.

The Club building is one of the most prominent structures on the perimeter of the Edinburgh Gardens in North Fitzroy, and provides a visual ‘gateway’ to an area which has been a sporting and recreational hub for local residents since the 1860s.
