 Icon by Cassie May

Icon takes its lead from significant built heritage, popular culture and social history in and around the City of Yarra. Exhibited in the Richmond Town Hall’s level 1 corridor, each artist focuses on a different form of iconography – be it from culture, places or identities. The works present striking and commanding portraits of a different nature, and revisit and deconstruct the icons that we think we know. The exhibition includes photography, painting, drawing and printmaking.

Curated by Cassie May, Icon includes dynamic and highly-regarded Melbourne-based artists Matt Arbuckle, Bob Bloxham, Louise Blyton, Jane Brown, Lizzie Dennis, Fred Fowler, Cam Gill, Rona Green, Warren Lane, Paula Mahoney, Jordan Marani, Saffron Newey, Phuong Ngo, Kitty Owens, Cat Poljski, Kate Robertson, Benjamin Sexton, David Wadelton and Sharon West.

Cassie May is an independent curator who creates engaging exhibitions and arts projects.

The artists were invited to participate in this exhibition for their diverse and inspiring art practices that navigate social and cultural history.

Icon was presented at the Richmond Town Hall between 8 August and 27 October 2017.
