A Strange Space is presented by a Centre for Projection Art in partnership with Midsumma Festival 2021 and proudly supported by City of Yarra.

A Strange Space is an open-air exhibition of site-responsive projection art, performance, music, dance and online interactive works by LGBTIQA+ artists and allies, presented within Collingwood Yards. Co-curated by Jacob Tolo and Edwina Bartlem for Centre for Projection Art and the 2021 Midsumma Festival, the projection artworks and performances featured in this multi-arts program explore the theme of “a strange space” and the various forms, ideas and experiences that this concept evokes.

Curated around the title and theme of A Strange Space, this project situates site-responsive projection art at the centre of a multi-arts creative program featuring performance, music, dance and spoken-word. Central to this project are forms, ideas and experiences of space including physical, architectural, embodied, viral, social, psychological, virtual and imagined. At times, the projections will become backdrops for performances, encouraging visual and conceptual dialogues between different artworks and the architecture of this precinct.

Artists: Megan Beckwith, Alison Bennett, Jane Crappsley, Wesley Dowling, Jenna Eriksen, KP Finley, Susan Maco Forrester, Jonathan Homsey, Susannah Langley, Drew Pettifer, Leisa Prowd, Queertech.io, Melinda Smith, Scotty So, Van Sowerwine & Isobel Knowles, Eric Jong, Yandell Walton and Wendy Yu.
