The Man with 1000 Faces Diptych exhibition by Katayoun Javan
Thursday 17 October 2019 - Thursday 31 October 2019
Res Artis presents Katayoun Javan’s exhibition, The Man with 1000 Faces – Diptych at their project space in Collingwood. Javan recently completed a nine-month artist residency as part Yarra City Council’s Room to Create program.
Katayoun Javan is an Iranian photographic artist based in Melbourne. She studied photography at Tehran Azad University and completed a MFA at Deakin University in 2013. Through documentary photography, portraiture and use of found photos she draws on personal stories to explore notions of memory, home and displacement.
The exhibition combines video work with 1000 photos of Javan’s father, who was executed during the Iranian Revolution of 1979. Javan says of her work: “The series refers to my family photo archive, reproducing my father’s photos and remaining belongings and appropriating iconic photos and texts from the Iranian Revolution and newspapers at the time. For the last 40 years it has been taboo to speak of him, his existence was censored. Through this work I am reclaiming my father’s existence.”
