Love Works : Jess Taylor

Wednesday 11 September 2019 - Friday 04 October 2019

Love Works is a series of artwork exploring the human emotion par excellence, love – as labour, as obligation, as consuming fire, as heavy weight.

Recent life events – the loss of a close friend, the birth of a new child, the near implosion of a family unit – have thrown the artist's complicated relationship to love into focus. Evoking myths and monsters, these works are Jess Taylor's attempt to catalogue the ways in which she loves, and to reconcile these with the pure love archetypes presented throughout her upbringing and by society at large.

Jess Taylor's practice explores fascination with fictional horror primarily through digital methods of making. Within the broader realm of horror, Taylor has a particular interest in myth, monsters, and depictions of female brutality, sadism, and masochism. Scanning her body using 3D imaging technology and manipulating it through various digital programs, Taylor creates intricate 3D printed objects in plastic and metals, which are then augmented with traditional sculptural processes such as molding, casting and woodwork. The resulting works sit between old and new media, their traditional aesthetic belying their new media origins.
