The eighth installment of Speak Percussion’s Before Nightfall series features critically acclaimed European ensemble Dans les arbres.

Before Nightfall is a series of artistic encounters between Speak and internationally renowned guest artists with each encounter occurring across the course of a single day. Starting in the morning, Speak and the guest artist begin the creation of a new collaborative work, developing musical, spatial and conceptual structures that form the basis of a concert-length piece. What results is an intense meeting of minds, culminating in a performance for an intimate audience. 

Dans le arbres are an improvising ensemble comprising pianist Christian Wallumrød, clarinetist Xavier Charles, guitarist Ivar Grydeland and percussionist Ingar Zach.

Dans les arbres have released two critically acclaimed albums on the coveted record label ECM and have performed at notable contemporary music and jazz festivals around the world. Parallel to their quartet work, they have collaborated with music luminaries including Jim O’Rourke, Otomo Yoshihide and Yumio Tanaka. In 2015 they performed “About Nature” in the Norwegian Opera House with Oslo Sinfonietta for the Ultima Festival. In that same year, they were nominated for the Nordic Council Music Prize. They have just released their third album, Phosphorescence.

Speak Percussion has shaped the sound of 21st century Australian percussion music through the creation and presentation of ambitious arts projects. Internationally recognised as a leader in the fields of experimental and contemporary classical music, Speak are constantly seeking to redefine the potential of percussion.
