Fem Fatale Exhibition

Friday 09 March 2018

Fem Fatale presents new work by our young artists in residence at Block Studios. Come along and enjoy this exhibition accompanied by a night of spoken word and live DJ performances by female and gender diverse young people.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, self-expression by young people comes to the fore in Fem Fatale. People who are not male make up 74% of visual art graduates on average, yet only 34% are present in museum exhibitions, collections, and art reviews and a mere 40% are represented by commercial galleries. The Fem Fatale is a person who is not necessarily feminine and not necessarily female, but someone who is impacted by the patriarchy in significant ways. They are determined to resist and transform.

Join us at Brunswick Street Art Gallery from 6pm on Friday 9 March for this free event, or visit the exhibition between Wednesday 28 February and Tuesday 13 March.

Artists:

Emma Jensen, QQQ NeNe, Jacob Coppledge, Philippa Griffin, Jasmine Pickup, Ella Shay, Maddy Cleeve-Gerkens and Isabella Kottek.

Statement from Curator Rebeca Sacchero:

"As we celebrate International Women’s Day, self-expression interrogating identity from young artists comes to the fore in Fem Fatale.

As these young artists frame their territory we see narratives emerging which transgress dominant ideology. Whether it be patriarchy, hegemonic masculinity, capitalism or colonialism, these young artists are determined to resist and transform through self-expression which is authentic, meaningful and imbued with vitality. This expression marks the space for social, cultural and political alternatives to oppressive structures.

Often missed or drowned out, these practices are emblematic of the realities of young people as they interrogate the world as it is, and create a new set of rules and boundaries. It is not so much about feminism or women, more specifically it is about opening spaces for the underdog, the underrepresented and the marginalised. The powerfully quiet and the voice hoarse from shouting."
