Karen Casey
Record Keepers grew out of artist Karen Casey’s participation in ‘Dufkyen: The Aboriginal Print Portfolio’, commissioned by the Kingdom of the Netherlands to commemorate 400 years of Dutch contact with Australia.
It was created in the spirit of friendship between the Dutch and Aboriginal peoples.
Inspired by the story of the Dutch ship the Duyfken, which circumnavigated Australia in 1606, and subsequent explorers such as Abel Tasman who mapped the Tasmanian coastline, the work brings together two distinct elements.
The imagery is derived from the cast forms made between people shaking hands and the cover of Abel Tasman’s personal journal.
